Six Tips for Hiring Top Personal Injury Lawyer

  1.  Find an attorney in your state. Attorneys are licensed in the state they practice.  Although you can get a referral from another attorney out of state, the attorney handling your case must be a member of the bar in that state.
  2.  Find a law firm that specializes in personal injury, wrongful death, and malpractice law. If you visit the website of a firm that claims to "do it all", stay away.  No firm can be great at every type of law, any more than any doctor is great at all types of medicine.  If you wouldn't hire a podiatrist to perform your heart surgery, don't hire an immigration lawyer to handle your personal injury case.
  3.  Bigger is not always better   A large national personal injury firm advertises that size matters.  We agree. When you hire the firm you need to know the reputation and experience of the lawyer who will be handling your case.  With large high-volume firms, your case is assigned to an attorney you have not had the chance to research, and it could be handed off to a junior attorney or someone who may be transitioning out of the mega-firm to pursue other employment.
  4.  Check the Georgia Bar site for any complaints. The Georgia Bar will tell if you an attorney is in good standing, but can also provide you with information about past complaints.
  5.  Check reviews  Smaller law firms may not have hundreds of reviews because they specialize in personal injury law and keep their caseloads at a manageable level.  But the reviews they do have should be positive and descriptive.  Be aware that many firms hire outside companies to provide them with false reviews.  You can usually spot the fake reviews because they are general and don't give specifics of the case.  And remember, reviews at larger "do it all" firms are spread across many attorneys who handle cases that are not related to personal injury law.
  6.  Look for citations. Top personal injury lawyers often have awards and recognitions such as "SuperLawyers" that set them apart from their competition.  These recognitions are only given to the best of the best.
